Quantum Computing Underground

Radiation and cosmic rays pose a serious obstacle to large-qubit superconducting quantum computers. Energetic photons and particles can deposit large amounts of energy in a qubit chip, leading to significant decoherence of the system. We are partnering with Fermilab and other collaborators under the Quantum Science Center to study the application of our low-background underground resources to quantum computing. We are also bringing our superconducting detector and readout technology expertise to apply active and passive particle shielding solutions for future quantum computers.
